NEWCASTLE MP Sharon Grierson has defended a decision to revert to original plans to build a childcare centre on the lower side of Merewether Heights Public School.Ms Grierson was responding to a protest outside her office on Monday over safety concerns that centre on a school driveway.Parents want the centre on the school's Scenic Drive side.Ms Grierson said the centre had gone through the most rigorous assessment of any development application and it was time to begin construction. To date, the project has been assessed by the Department of Community Services, state and federal education departments, Newcastle City Council and an independent review. The council approval included improvements to the school driveway."The NSW Education Department does have responsibility for the safety of children and they have approved construction," Ms Grierson said.
